Notes: Diagnostics on this -11/40

Running Some Diagnostics

[20 Sept 2005] This machine has been a bit unstable since I got it. It was unstable for the original owner. The thought it was heat. After running some of the memory diagnostics, I believe that one of the MF11-L core board sets had a tendency to get flakey when it got warm. I have removed that MF11-L and have not seen memory errors since. What I want to do is run the CPU, memory and device diagnostics to gain some confidence that the problems were related to the memory and nothing else.

Tests in grey I do not have.

ZQKB - Processor Test 17 System Exerciser

When I run this test it prints 3 numbers followed by the characters 000 to 177 (?). I have the documentation for this so I have to tear into it and figure out what it is telling me.

The lower 9 bits of SW control the devices to be checked and the upper bits control how the exerciser behaves. The test I ran included all devices. This caused the output that was seen. To test only the CPU set SW to 000777, this inhibits all tests except the CPU and tests the memory above 4kW.

I set the SW to 000757, this inhibits all but the line clock and it ran for about an hour before I halted it.

BKDM - Processor Test 14 Traps

When I run this test it halts at 000034. Single stepping causes it to go to 000032 and then again to 000034.

CQKC - PDP-11/40, 11/45 Instruction Exerciser

This diagnostic runs and then halts at 000002 with the following output:

.R CQKC??.BI?
CQKCG2.BIC

DCQKCG2 11/40 & 11/45 INST EXER
OPT.CP=105404

OPT.DEV.=000001

PASS #0000 VPC=022754 PSW=000000

ZKAQ - Processor Power Fail Test

This test asks for different SW setting and then prints a series of END OF PASS messages. I assume that at that point you should turn off power and then back on and see if it has any problems. This is how the PDP-8 power fail test works. The M9301 interferes with this so the test does not seem to act the way it should. I have to flip a switch to try it properly.

CKBA - PDP-11/40 Basic CP Test SXT

This test ran for 20 minutes without any output and without halting, there was also no activity on the console lights. I halted it at 002100. I also ran it on simh and it did not stop after 5 minutes.

CKBB - PDP-11/40 Basic CP Test SOB

This test ran with quite a bit of activity on the console lights. I set switch 12 and it did not stop. I set switch 15 and it did not stop. I halted it after 30 minutes.

CKBC - PDP-11/40 Basic CP Test XOR

This test ran with little activity on the console lights. I halted it after 10 minutes.

CKBD - PDP-11/40 Basic CP Test MARK

This test ran with little activity on the console lights. I halted it after 10 minutes.

CKBE - PDP-11/40 Basic CP Test RTT

This test halted immediately at 001464.

CKBI - PDP-11/40 Basic CP Test ASH

This test halted immediately at 000034.

CQKA - MUL-DIV Random Exerciser

This test halts immediately at 000010.

BKTA - KT11-D Basic Logic

This test halts immediately at 003002. This indicates that Maintenance Mode of the KT11-D did not function properly. The "destination only" mode either relocated both source and destination or relocated neither.

BKTB - KT11-D Access Keys Test

This test halted quickly with the message PC= 2570  PS= 000000. Indicates that KT11-D did not function properly when turned on for first test.
The halt address was 006122.

BKTC - MTPI/MFPI with Memory Management test

This test halted immediately at 004646.

BKTD - KT11-D Processor States Test

This test halted immediately at 001306.

BKTF - Memory Management Abort Tests

This test halted immediately at 001460.

BKTG - KT11-D Exerciser

This test halted immediately at 001156.
